Roy Yacht Charter Has Now Ceased Trading

Welcome to Roy Yacht Charter, a small charter operator, which is personally managed by myself, the owner of the one yacht "Bumpie" and a member of the Yacht Charter Association and a RYA/DoT qualified commercial Yachtmaster.

The Yacht

"Bumpie" is a Jeanneau Sunrise 35 and has 8 Berths (6 available for guests on Skippered Charters). As can be seen from the specification on the back page, she is equipped to a higher standard than often found in charter yachts, with instruments that include Compass, Speed and distance log, Wind speed and direction, Radio direction finder, Fixed and portable VHF radios, G.P.S. with electronic Chart Plotting and Radar. For ease of handling, all halliards etc. are led back to the cockpit and she is equipped with a roller reefing Genoa and "Dutchman" reefing main and the optional spinnaker is equipped with a snuffer. Below decks she has three double cabins plus two single berths in the saloon. The galley is equipped with a double burner gas stove with oven, double sink with hot and cold water, refrigerated ice box and sufficient cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery for a crew of eight. The heads also have hot and cold water, shower and flushing toilet. Mains electricity sockets are provided ( when plugged into a marina power point ). A masthead TV aerial is fitted and 12V "cigar lighter" sockets fitted in the saloon (bring your own portable TV!). There is also a FM/MW/LW radio- cassette player. Of course there is also all the necessary safety equipment on board (liferaft, lifejackets, harnesses, lifebuoys, fire extinguishers etc) and navigational equipment (32 Charts, 7 Pilot books, Tidal stream atlases, Almanac, Navigation instruments etc.).

On deck all the usual deck gear is provided (anchors, warps, fenders, guardwires etc. together with an inflatable dinghy and oars (2hp outboard motor is available as an option). An Autohelm autopilot is also available as an option.

The cruising area

"Bumpie" has a DoT classification "2" cruising area ( 60 miles from a safe haven) which effectively means that she is licensed to cruise anywhere around the UK coast, northern France and the Channel Islands.

Dartmouth has been selected as the base, as it is central to what is probably the best, and most attractive, cruising area in the country. Brixham and Torquay are to the East. Salcombe, The River Yealm, Plymouth and Fowey are to the West. The Channel Islands are less than 80 miles away and act as a stepping-stone to the beautiful Northern Brittany coast. The Dart is a beautiful river, with plenty to do and see, should you be unfortunate enough to be storm-bound on your first day.

Classes of charter

Bareboat.

This is only available to experienced yachtsmen. The boat is yours for the period of the charter, so long as you stay within the cat.2 cruising range.

Skippered.

I am a RYA/DoT qualified commercial Yachtmaster and personally skipper all skippered charters. I am prepared to sail with any crew, from total novices, to acting as crew for experienced sailors, who wish to skipper their own yacht but lack either the confidence, or able crew, to take the bareboat option. Please note that the cost is the same, although it would be appreciated if you fed your skipper! The itinerary of a skippered cruise depends on a number of factors, not least the wishes and ability of the charterers. It would be of benefit to all concerned, to telephone and discuss this in advance and I will do my best to meet your requirements, weather and tide permitting.

Single Berth.

Are you unable to raise a large enough party to make the charter of a yacht an economic proposition? If so, I maintain a data base of those in a similar position, please contact me and I will add your details to this list and put you in touch with others. In this way it is hoped you can raise a large enough party to share the boat (and expense) for an enjoyable holiday. Please note, Skippered Charter costs no extra, for bareboat charter booked in this way it is your responsibility to confirm the sailing ability of the elected "Skipper".

Charter conditions

The scale of charges is given on the back page. These charges are purely for the charter of the yacht and do not include such things as fuel, gas, mooring fees, food, car parking etc. A security deposit is required. This is refunded at the end of the charter, provided that the yacht is returned, on time, fully fuelled and watered, undamaged, and in a clean condition. If not, any costs involved will be deducted.

Yacht Charter Association

Dealing with a YCA member you, not only receive the personal service of a small company, but also get the security of a large organisation. Your deposit monies are bonded ( Bond No. 95105 ). Regular inspections are made to ensure that the YCA's extremely high standards of safety, comfort and service are maintained. A free mediation service is provided in the event of a dispute between the company and the charterer. In the unlikely event of the yacht not being available, the support of other member companies is obtainable to find a suitable alternative.
